Step Up Housing

Designed on the land of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation.

Houses in the sky proposes a small, collective prototypical apartment block, maintaining the ideals of an individual house; privacy, comfort and customisability, within the compact dimensions of a collective housing cluster. The things we love about the individual detached house – ample alfresco areas, private access, good inside/outside relationships – need to be retained in denser housing models if they are to be successful. The proposed prototypical model is based on a courtyard house, assembled collectively into a low rise courtyard apartment. Adaptable to many different locations, the courtyard apartment, with its efficient double-oriented disposition and uniform plan depth, allows for multiple combinations and distributions of apartment types without adding construction costs, all naturally ventilated and lit and harnessing the most powerful and pleasant heat source; the sun.
